Best father of the bride speech

best father of bride speechOur short guide to the best father of the bride speech.

What Makes A Great Public Speaker?

Preparation of your speech is one thing … delivering it is yet another.

The good news is that your family and friends at a wedding reception are very forgiving. So long as it’s obvious your heart and soul is in it, you can get away with almost anything when it comes to the presentation of the speech. In fact, the best advice for most fathers giving a father of the bride speech is “just get out there, do it and and do it for your daughter”.

Here are some basic tips to successful public speaking:

  • Prepare some notes, so you don’t get lost if your mind goes blank.
  • Stand up straight, keep your chin up and breath deeply. It helps you speak more clearly.
  • Don’t fidget – and definitely keep your hands out of your pockets, away from those keys and small change!
  • Speak to the people at the back of the room – look at them as you start to speak, and speak loud enough for them to hear you. Keep that volume throughout the speech.
  • Look people in the eye as you speak – it helps to build rapport – but don’t stare at just one person all the time!
  • Speak slowly and clearly, and keep to the point without rambling.
  • Try to relax and communicate how you really feel as sincerely as you can.
  • Remember, people love hearing stories much more than listening to lectures.
  • And enjoy yourself – you are paying!!

    Father Of The Bride Duties

father of the bride dutiesFather Of The Bride Duties

As the father of the bride, you are a key member of the bridal party, and you shouldn’t underestimate the role you will play both on the wedding day itself and in the lead up to the wedding. Here are some of the duties the father of the bride might need to take on; some of which you will be expecting and some of which you might not.

    Thank you to

Father of the bride duty 1: Paying for the wedding
In modern society it is becoming more common for the couple to foot the bill for the wedding themselves or for both sets of parents and the couple to divide the cost between them. However, traditionally it is still the father of the bride that pays for the wedding so you will probably need to make some contribution.
As soon as your daughter is in a relationship that you suspect will lead to marriage, take a look at your finances, decide how much you are willing and able to pay towards the wedding, and subtly make your daughter aware of that. Once the engagement is announced, stick to your guns and don’t make promises in the excitement of the moment that will land you in serious debt.

Father of the bride duty 2: Walking your daughter down the aisle
In this role you are literally giving your daughter away to her new husband and his family. Your main duty is to get her to the church on time and walk her down the aisle to where the groom is waiting. The occasion will no doubt be emotional and you may be tempted to have a heartfelt father daughter chat at this time, but unless you want her to be in floods of tears as she arrives at the ceremony settle for giving her a hug and telling her she looks beautiful.

Father of the bride duty 3: Making a speech

During the reception it is customary for the father of the bride to make a short speech, thanking the guests and those that have helped with the wedding planning, and talking a little about his daughter and new son-in-law. At the end of the speech the father of the bride usually proposes a toast to the happy couple.

Father of the bride duty 4: The father daughter dance
If you’re comfortable on the dance floor, the father daughter dance can be one of the happiest moments of your life. If you have two left feet you might be dreading it. Take a few dance lessons before the big day to learn some basic steps. Try to arrange a lesson for yourself, your wife, your daughter and her fiance all together; it will provide welcome relief from pre wedding stress.

Father of the bride duty 5: Controlling the mother of the bride
You may not have seen it coming, but a daughter getting married can have an unusual affect on her mother. There are bound to be disagreements between the bride and her mother over who should arrange what and how things should be done, so think of yourself as a peacekeeper. Be willing to listen to both parties and encourage them to find a middle ground. At the end of the day it is your daughter’s wedding, and you might need to remind her mother of that from time to time.

Father of the bride duty 6: Wedding counsellor
You might think that the father of the bride should be exempt from wedding planning duties but you couldn’t be more wrong. As an older wiser man you may be called on to deal with everything from pre-wedding nerves to supplier negotiations. Offer to help out when things get stressful for your daughter. You may be able to deal with wedding problems with less emotion than she can.

A husband and wife are getting cosy in bed. The passion is heating up. But then the wife stops and says, ” I don’ t feel like it. I just want you to hold me.” The husband asks why. She explains that he must not be in tune with her emotional needs as a woman. The husband realizes that nothing is going to happen tonight and he might as well deal with it. So the next day the husband takes her shopping at a big dept. store. They walk around and she tries on three very expensive outfits. He then tells his wife “We’ll take all three of them”. They then get matching shoes, a set of diamond earrings and a diamond bracelet. The wife is so excited (she thinks her husband has flipped out, but she does not care) and goes to the pay desk. Her husband says, ” No – no – no, honey we ‘ re not going to buy all this stuff.”. His wife’s face goes blank. “No honey – I just want you to hold this stuff for a while. ” Her face gets really red and she is about to explode and then the husband says “You must not be in tune with my financial needs as a man!

    When does he speak:
Usually the father of the bride is the first person to speak, and normally is at the end of the meal. Break with tradition if you are concerned and get your speech out of the way before the meal. You and the other speakers can then enjoy the rest of the evening.

Your speech should last 5 minutes.

    Write down your headings from the speech, for example;

    • Welcome
    • Thank you’s
    • Why I love you so much
    • The bride’s early years
    • Her career
    • How they met
    • Welcome the groom to the family
    • Marriage guidance

This makes it easier to write and breaks it down. End the speech with some thoughts on marriage and welcome the groom to the family. Always add some sentiment, tell her how proud you are of her, make them laugh and make them cry.

    Good taste:
Never be crass but be funny where you can. Always remember, if you find things funny, others may not, ask a close friend for a view. If it isnt funny, don’t go there. Very importantly, never ever embarrass your daughter. Remember it is her day and not yours, even though you may have paid for it!! Keep any jokes short and punchy, if they don’t go well, just keep moving.

    Must keep it friendly:
Do not be formal, it should be as if you were telling a story to friends and family, relax they all want to hear you and want you to do well. Nobody wants a bad father of the bride speech.

Try and learn the speech, you don’t have to know it by heart, but the more you do know it the more confident you will be. So, if you haven’t had to learn anything in a while, just read it over and over a few times, or even record it on a device and play it in the car.

    Make copies:
Print off several copies and hand them to friends, so you won’t panic about losing the speech.

    Relax and don’t rush it:
Take your time, pause for effect and speak clearly and slowly. Use a microphone if one is available, it will help you sound clearer and obviously louder and be received better.

    Have a lot to drink:
Only joking, have a couple before the speech to help calm yourself but no more.

    Be animated:
Have fun, it is a performance after all, use your hands and be expressive, this will help you feel in control. You are with friends and family, who want you to do well, so try and enjoy yourself. And show the reception how proud you are of your beautiful daughter.

    Big finish:
Always end with a toast to the happy couple and gert everybody up and raise their glasses, this is your big finish, so enjoy it!!!

Here are a few opening lines to consider, the opening line is crucial to calm your nerves, get their attention and start you off on the course to a great speech.

I do feel very honored to stand here today, I can speak and you will listen and let me tell you, for a man married xx years, this is a rare event.

I am a very proud father today, my beautiful daughter has become someone’s wife. I am not necessarily losing a daughter, but gaining a son, and a designated driver, a gardener, an odd job man, a car mechanic, and a personal decorator.

I had tears in my eyes when I saw my beautiful daughter this morning, not just because she looked so stunning but because I was adding up the bill for today and I had forgotten the cost of the dress!!

Good luck with your speech, don’t forget you are the father of the bride, go and give a great father of bride speech…
